Here is an interesting thought about Iran and its behaviour towards Israel and the world.
When the religious Ayatollahs seized power in Iran (back in 1979), their intention was to create an Islamic state while expanding their influence in the Arabic world. But there was an obstacle standing in their way, and it was definitely NOT Israel. The Iranian Muslims are Shia, but the Shia sect constitutes only about 10% of the Islamic world. The remaining majority of Iranian Muslims are Sunni. Most of Iran’s neighboring countries, like Iraq and Saudi Arabia, are also Sunni. If you were Shia and had grand plans to expand your religious influence, you would not survive for very long in such an environment. The war with Iraq was just the beginning; so what is the solution? A deterrent. How do you achieve a deterrent? By having nuclear weapons. But then how do you develop those weapons, which could potentially become an unacceptable threat to the Sunni nations in the region? You guessed it right: all the Muslim nations in the region “hate” the Zionists… and the Zionists POSSESS nuclear weapons. In essence, this was used as a scapegoat – build a nuclear bomb to destroy the Jewish nation… In the 1980’s, Khomeini gave a speech in which he declared: “Een rezhim-i eshghalgar-i Quds bayad az sahneh-i ruzgar mahv shaved.” This means, “This occupation regime over Jerusalem must vanish from the arena of time.” Iran never intended to get into an armed conflict with Israel. The country was just using this as a “shield” against the Sunnis… But these kind of statements create their own dynamics. Israel started “playing” the game as well, leading us the the current situation.
